MODEST MOUSE - WE WERE DEAD BEFORE THE SHIP EVEN SANK

The sound of the previous albums seems almost lost, but still armed with jerky vocals (which still remain an acquired taste) and bitey guitars, this album is one I’ve been waiting for since “Good News for People Who Love Bad News”. The almost sea jaunt of “March into the Sea” is a fantastic opening to the album, gripping from the second you hit play, although a direct comparison to the Pixies could probably be made you can soon forget any idea of this by the time “Dashboard” starts. Despite this track probably pissing off die hard Modest Mouse fans, as its more commercial than their usual tracks, I like it. The album continues to roll on in highs of rapid riffs and lows of slow melodies, with input from the Smiths guitarist Johnny Murr (oh god! But your wrong, it does actually add some weight to songs he appears on) and Shins vocalist James Mercer helps out on classic track California. A key track for me was the foot-tapping “We’ve Got Everything” which I’m sure will hailed as stand out track, but I much prefer the final track “Invisible” as it seems to pull together the album whilst ending it on an ultimate high. For fans of earlier Modest Mouse, this may not satisfy all of your needs although it does seem to be a grower, but to those looking for something different this is definitely different.

for fans of: the shins, yeah yeah yeahs, gogol bordello
